How the Insurance Process Works in Chicago

A homeowner-friendly guide to getting your rebuild approved and completed

Insurance claims can get overwhelming fast. The paperwork, the timelines, the adjuster visits, and the scope disagreements can all slow the rebuild down, especially when you're juggling life at the same time. MG Residential Services helps Chicago homeowners move from damage to a clear rebuild plan.

Quick clarity before we start

MG Residential Services is a construction and remodeling contractor. We are not a public adjuster.

We do provide construction documentation, measurements, photos, estimating, code and scope clarification, and full project delivery.

We do not interpret policy coverage or represent you in claim settlement negotiations.

Step-by-Step: What to Expect

Step 1

Make the home safe and stop further damage

Before anything else, protect the property and prevent the situation from getting worse.

If emergency services are needed, MG can help coordinate qualified partners for:

  • • Water damage cleanup and restoration
  • • Fire and smoke damage restoration
  • • Mold removal and remediation

Once the property is stable, MG leads the reconstruction and remodeling work.

Step 2

Decide whether to open a claim (MG can help you think it through)

Not every situation should become a claim, and not every homeowner knows what to do first.

MG can walk the property, document what we see, and help you understand what a proper repair scope could look like. This helps you make an informed decision before you start the process.

Step 3

Open the claim with your insurance carrier

When you open a claim, you'll typically be asked for:

  • • Date and cause of loss (what happened)
  • • Areas affected (kitchen, bathroom, basement, multiple rooms)
  • • What you did to prevent further damage
  • • Photos or a short description of what you're seeing

MG can give you a simple checklist for what to capture and how to stay organized, so you don't miss key details.

Step 4

Adjuster assignment and property walkthrough

After the claim is filed, your insurance company assigns an adjuster and schedules a walkthrough.

MG can attend the walkthrough when appropriate to:

  • • Provide measurements, photos, and construction notes
  • • Identify repair-relevant items that are easy to overlook
  • • Keep the conversation focused on repair scope and rebuild requirements

We focus on what it will take to rebuild correctly and meet code, not policy interpretation.

Step 5

Scope and estimate alignment

This is where many projects stall.

Carrier estimates can be incomplete, unclear, or disconnected from how real construction happens. When that happens, the rebuild slows down, change orders pile up, and homeowners get stuck in limbo.

MG helps by:

  • • Creating a detailed contractor scope and estimate for the rebuild
  • • Using insurance-aligned estimating practices when appropriate (including Xactimate)
  • • Identifying missing line items tied to proper repair sequencing and code requirements
  • • Supporting supplements related to the work we will perform

The goal is simple: get the construction scope aligned so the rebuild can move forward without constant surprises.

Step 6

Approval, planning, and scheduling

Once the scope is aligned, MG builds a plan you can rely on:

  • • Final scope of work
  • • Timeline with milestones
  • • Material and finish planning (if applicable)
  • • Permit support when required

If you want upgrades beyond what insurance covers, we keep those items clearly separated so everything stays transparent.

Step 7

Construction and project management

MG manages the rebuild like a professional remodel, not a patch job:

  • • One GC-led plan
  • • Coordinated trades and sequencing
  • • Clean jobsite standards
  • • Consistent communication
  • • Quality control and finish-level execution
Step 8

Final walkthrough and closeout

At completion, we walk the project with you, knock out any punch list items, and confirm everything is finished properly.

If documentation is needed for completion, MG provides what's appropriate based on the work performed.
